Nor'Easter Damage — Homeowner Unsure What to Do

The January 2026 nor'easter that came through Middlesex County was sustained 50+ mph winds with driving rain over two days. This homeowner — a large colonial with complex hip roof geometry in Edison Township — took a direct hit.

After the storm, they could see shingle damage from the driveway: cracked tab areas, a section of ridge cap blown off, and two gutters visibly bent from wind and debris. They didn't know if it was a repair situation or a full replacement — or whether insurance would cover it.

They called us before calling the insurance company. That's the right order. We always recommend documenting damage with a contractor first so you have an independent scope before the adjuster arrives.

"We had no idea how to handle this. We didn't know if we should call insurance first, or a roofer first, or what the process was. Best Crew walked us through the whole thing — they were our advocate from the first call."
02 — Our Assessment

47 Damaged Shingles. Documented.

We walked the entire 3,100 sq ft roof system and catalogued the storm damage in detail — because the quality of your documentation directly determines what the adjuster approves.

47
Cracked or broken shingles documented
100%

Gutter sections bent beyond repair
47 cracked/broken shingles: Photographed and mapped by location on each roof plane. Storm-impact cracking follows a distinct pattern (vs. age cracking) — critical for adjuster review.
Granule loss pattern: Documented across south and west exposures — accelerated granule displacement consistent with high-velocity impact, not normal aging.
Ridge cap destruction: Entire ridge cap section lifted and broken — exposed the ridge board to water infiltration during and after the storm.
Bent gutters: Three sections on rear and side elevations — wind-driven debris impact. Documented with measurements and photographs for adjuster scope inclusion.
Pre-existing condition noted: We also noted which areas showed wear consistent with age rather than storm damage — keeping the claim accurate and defensible.

Before the adjuster ever arrived, this homeowner had a complete damage report with photographs, measurements, and a contractor scope. That documentation is what drove the claim outcome.

03 — The Solution

Owens Corning Duration Storm — Class 4 Impact Resistant

After seeing the damage from this nor'easter, we had a specific recommendation: Owens Corning Duration Storm. This is a Class 4 impact-resistant shingle — the highest rating available — tested to withstand 2" steel ball drops at 90 mph.

For NJ homeowners, Class 4 isn't just a durability upgrade. Most NJ insurance carriers offer a 15–25% reduction in homeowner's insurance premium when you upgrade to a Class 4 roof. Over a 10-year period, that discount often pays for the upgrade cost many times over.

Why We Recommended Duration Storm

Standard architectural shingles are rated Class 3 at best. The shingles we removed from this roof were standard 3-tab — they cracked under impact because they weren't designed for it.

Duration Storm uses a reinforced SureNail technology strip and a rubber-modified asphalt formulation that flexes on impact rather than fracturing. On a home that already filed one storm claim, the next roof should be harder to damage.

15–25% Insurance Premium Reduction (Class 4 in NJ)

We documented the material selection in the claim submission so the homeowner could immediately apply for the Class 4 discount with their carrier after installation.

Owens Corning Duration Storm: Class 4 impact-resistant (UL 2218), 130 mph wind rating, SureNail technology, limited lifetime warranty.
Full tearoff: Existing shingles removed to deck — clean start, deck inspected for water damage before new roof installed.
Ice & water shield at eaves and valleys: Code-compliant minimum plus extended up all valleys — complex hip geometry creates multiple valley intersections.
New ridge cap and ventilation: Ridge cap replaced using OC Duration hip & ridge shingles, ridge vent inspected and extended to full continuous run.
Adjuster advocacy: We walked the roof with the insurance adjuster — present for the inspection, available to answer technical questions, ensured the scope reflected actual damage.
04 — The Insurance Process

How We Got Full Replacement Approved

Insurance claims for roofing in NJ follow a predictable process, but the outcome depends heavily on who's in the room when the adjuster shows up and what documentation you hand them.

Day 1
Storm Occurs + Homeowner Calls Us
January 2026 nor'easter passes. Homeowner calls Best Crew before contacting insurance. We schedule an inspection for the following day.
Day 2
Full Damage Documentation
We walk the entire roof, photograph every damaged shingle with GPS timestamps, map damage locations by slope, measure granule loss areas, and document bent gutters. 47 cracked/broken shingles catalogued. Report prepared same day.
Day 3
Homeowner Files Claim with Documentation in Hand
Homeowner contacts insurance carrier with our damage report attached. Claims adjuster appointment scheduled for the following week. Having a contractor's scope upfront often accelerates scheduling and sets expectations for the adjuster before they arrive.
Day 10
We Walk Roof With Insurance Adjuster
Our project manager is on site when the adjuster arrives. We walk the roof together — we point out each documented damage point, explain the difference between storm-caused cracking and age wear, and answer technical questions about why the damage meets threshold for full replacement. This is the most important meeting in the entire claim process.
Day 14
Claim Approved — Full Replacement
Adjuster approves full roof replacement. Claim covers materials, labor, and gutter replacement. Homeowner's out-of-pocket: deductible only.
Day 21
Installation — Day 1 (Main Roof)
Full tearoff of existing shingles. Deck inspected — no moisture damage found. Ice & water shield installed at eaves and all valleys. OC Duration Storm laid across main slopes, complex hip geometry worked carefully to maintain alignment.
Day 22
Installation — Day 2 (Hips, Ridge, Cleanup)
All hip runs completed. Ridge cap and continuous ridge vent installed. Gutters replaced on the three damaged sections. Magnetic roller, full cleanup, homeowner walkthrough. Job complete.
05 — The Result

New Roof. Insurance Covered It.

The homeowner got a brand-new 3,100 sq ft roof with Class 4 impact-resistant shingles, paid for almost entirely by their insurance carrier. They also immediately qualified for a 20% reduction on their homeowner's insurance premium — which the carrier confirmed upon certificate of installation.

The complex hip roof geometry — with four main hips, multiple valley intersections, and dormers — took 1.5 days. The extra half-day was entirely due to the geometry, not any surprises. We quoted 1.5 days and delivered exactly that.

We thought this was going to be a nightmare. Best Crew made it easy — they handled the insurance side, explained every step, and the new roof is better than anything we had. The premium discount alone is worth thousands over time.
