New Jersey Storm Reality
New Jersey sits in the crosshairs of Atlantic storms, nor'easters, and severe summer weather. Your roof takes the brunt of all of it. Here's what we see most.
What to Look For
Some damage is obvious. A lot of it isn't — especially from the ground. Here's what our inspectors look for, and what you may notice yourself.
Not sure if what you're seeing is storm damage? We'll tell you straight — no pressure, no charge.

You've never filed a storm damage claim before. We have — hundreds of times. Here's exactly what happens when you call us.
Adjuster Advocacy
Insurance adjusters are good at their jobs — which means they're good at keeping claim payouts to a minimum. Having a licensed NJ roofing contractor present during the adjuster inspection consistently results in larger, more accurate claim approvals. Here's why.
"Initial adjuster estimate: $4,200. Final approved amount after we met with the adjuster: $14,800 — full replacement."
— Edison, NJ homeowner after a nor'easter, 2024
Adjusters aren't trying to cheat you — they're often understaffed and moving fast. Having a licensed contractor present simply ensures nothing is overlooked. In our experience, homeowners who have us present at the adjuster meeting receive claim approvals 30–50% higher than those who meet the adjuster alone.

Not sure which category your damage falls into? We'll give you an honest assessment — including whether we think a claim is worth filing. We're not going to push you to file if the damage doesn't support it.

Important
Do NOT get on your roof yourself. Wet, wind-damaged roofing is extremely hazardous. You can observe from the ground, but leave the actual inspection to licensed professionals. Falling is the #1 risk after storm events.
Protect Yourself
Within days of any significant nor'easter or storm event in New Jersey, unlicensed or fly-by-night contractors from out of state arrive in residential neighborhoods, going door to door offering "free inspections" and quick repair deals. They're often uninsured, not licensed in NJ, and will be long gone before you discover their work has failed — leaving you with no recourse and a voided warranty.
These contractors — commonly called "storm chasers" — are skilled at manipulating insurance claims, overcharging, and cutting corners. Some collect deposits and disappear entirely. The NJ Division of Consumer Affairs receives a surge of roofing complaints every year following major storm seasons.
The simple rule: only hire a contractor with a current NJ Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) license, a verifiable local address, and a track record in your county. Ask for their NJ HIC number and verify it at njconsumeraffairs.gov.
Best Crew Construction has been roofing Middlesex County and surrounding NJ counties since 2010. Our crew is our crew — the same experienced team that has handled storms from Sandy through today's nor'easters. We live here. We'll be here after the job is done. And our workmanship warranty means something because we're not going anywhere.
Common Questions
Answers to the questions NJ homeowners ask us most. When you have a specific question about your policy or damage, just call — we'll give you a straight answer.
Yes — most standard homeowners insurance policies in New Jersey cover roof damage caused by a sudden storm event, including wind, hail, falling trees, and ice dams. Coverage is typically subject to your deductible. Gradual wear and tear or neglect is generally excluded. We document all storm-related damage clearly so your adjuster can approve the full scope of replacement. For a deeper breakdown, see our NJ Roof Insurance Claims Guide.
Most NJ homeowners policies require you to file a claim "promptly" or within a specific window — commonly 1 year from the date of loss, though some policies are shorter. Do not wait. Even if the damage seems minor, call us for a free inspection. Hidden damage found during that inspection can be included in your claim. Delays can give insurers grounds to reduce or deny your payout.
Adjusters are employed by the insurance company, not you. Their initial estimate often undervalues the full scope of replacement. That's why we meet with your adjuster directly — we point out damage that adjusters sometimes overlook (flashing, decking, ventilation, ice-and-water shield requirements) and provide a line-by-line cost comparison. If you're still underpaid, you can file a supplemental claim or invoke your policy's appraisal clause. We help with both. You can also consider hiring a public adjuster — we can refer you to trusted ones in NJ.
A single weather-related claim generally has less impact than an at-fault claim. New Jersey law limits how insurers can surcharge after a non-fault loss. That said, filing multiple claims within a few years can affect renewability. We recommend speaking with your insurance agent before filing — and we can help you understand whether the damage clearly exceeds your deductible before you do. In most cases, full replacement claims are worth filing.
If the undamaged sections of your roof don't match the replaced sections — due to discontinued shingles, fading, or different dye lots — many policies include "matching" coverage that pays for a full replacement. NJ has consumer-friendly matching rules. We know how to present your claim to maximize the approved scope. In most hail and nor'easter cases, this results in full replacement approval. See our roof replacement service page for more information on what full replacement entails.
Actual Cash Value (ACV) means the insurer pays replacement cost minus depreciation based on the roof's age. If your roof is 15 years old, you might receive 40–50% of replacement cost up front. Replacement Cost Value (RCV) policies pay the full cost to replace your roof with like materials — with the depreciation "held back" until the work is complete and receipts are submitted. Always check your policy type. We help you submit the completion documentation to recover the full RCV holdback amount.
We prefer that you or an authorized adult is present so we can walk you through what we find. It's also very helpful when the insurance adjuster visits — having us there ensures nothing is missed. If you genuinely can't be home for the initial inspection, call us and we'll discuss options. The inspection is completely free with no obligation to hire us.
